How to Spot a Rug Pull in Meme Coins: 8 Checks Before You Buy
Eight on-chain checks that catch most meme coin rug pulls: mint and freeze authority, liquidity lock, holder concentration, linked wallets, creator history, fake volume, copycat names and sell tests. With real numbers from 2,474 Solana launches.

A rug pull is when the people behind a token take the money and leave: they pull the liquidity, dump a hidden supply, or lock everyone else out of selling. Meme coins are the easiest target because they launch fast, with little information and a lot of hype.
The good news is that most rugs leave traces on the chain before they happen. These eight checks take a few minutes, and the free ARC AI rug checker does most of them for you from a single address.
1. Can more tokens be minted?
If the mint authority is still enabled, the creator can print new tokens at any moment and sell them into the pool. On a meme coin it should be renounced. In October 2026, 39% of the risky Solana tokens ARC AI's Sentinel agent warned about still had mint authority open.
2. Can your wallet be frozen?
Freeze authority lets the creator freeze any holder's tokens, so you can buy but never sell. Again, it should be renounced. 16.4% of the tokens Sentinel warned about in October still had it.
3. Is the liquidity locked?
The liquidity pool is the money you sell into. If the creator holds the LP tokens unlocked, they can withdraw the pool in one transaction and the price goes to zero. Look for liquidity that is locked or burned. "Large amount of LP unlocked" was one of the most common danger flags across October's launches.
4. Who holds the supply?
If the top wallet holds 20% or more, or the top 10 hold most of the supply, a few people can crash the price whenever they like. Exclude the pool and known exchange wallets and look at what is left. "Single holder ownership" was the most frequent finding across the 2,474 launches ARC AI tracked in October.
5. Are the big holders secretly one person?
A common trick is to spread the supply over many fresh wallets so no single holder looks large. Check where those wallets got their first SOL: if the top holders were funded from the same address, it is likely one person. The ARC AI scan shows this as a wallet funding map; Bubblemaps shows token transfers between holders.
6. What has the creator launched before?
Scam deployers repeat themselves. RugCheck flags creators with a history of rugged tokens, and that flag appeared on dozens of October launches. A creator with three dead tokens is unlikely to make the fourth one different.
7. Is the volume real?
Fake volume makes a token look popular. Compare 24-hour volume with the size of the pool: volume of 50 times the liquidity, or six figures from a handful of trades, is a strong sign of wash trading. ARC AI flags this pattern automatically; 14.7% of October's tracked launches showed it.
8. Is it a copycat, and can you actually sell?
Scam tokens often copy the name and ticker of something famous (we regularly see fake "ETH", "BTC" and "LTC" tokens on Solana). Check that the contract address matches the official one. On EVM chains, also run a honeypot test and check the sell tax: a token you can buy but not sell, or that takes 50% on every sale, is a trap.
What the numbers say
Out of 2,474 promoted Solana launches ARC AI tracked in October 2026, 67.6% of those followed for three days had lost at least half their liquidity, or died, within 72 hours. Most new meme coins do not survive their first week, whether or not anyone rugs them, so treat every new launch as high risk. The full report is on the Rug Risk Index page.
Do all eight in one step
Paste the contract address into the ARC AI rug checker (Solana and six EVM chains, no wallet needed) or send it to @Arcai_scan_bot on Telegram. You get mint and freeze authority, liquidity lock, holders, the funding map, a wash-trading flag and a clean / caution / risky verdict in a few seconds. For more on picking tools, see our comparison of Solana rug checkers.
Automated checks can miss risks, and a clean scan is not a promise the price will hold. This is information, not financial advice.
